this morning she met with palestinian president. later today she will be in cairo to meet with world leaders. palestinian gunmen shot and killed six men they say were collaborating israel and dragged one body behind a motorcycle. susan mcginnis is watching all of this. >> reporter: good morning. once again there were signs of a deal and, again, they slipped away. now in cairo, secretary clinton will meet with officials who are in contact with hamas and now talking about a deal she says in the days ahead. as truce talks continue so does the violence. this is what cbs reporter charlie d'agata saw from his gaza city hotel early this morning. the israeli military launched dozens of air strikes overnight and this morning. and hamas militants have launched more than 100 rockets into israel in the past 24

hours. five israelis and more than 100 palestinians have died in the past eight days. >> we are in a battle to save lives. >> reporter: really prime minister benjamin netanyahu met with secretary of state hillary clinton on tuesday night saying israel is hoping for peaceful to end the fighting. >> this is a possibility of achieving a long term solution to this problem through diplomatic means we prefer that. >> reporter: clinton assured israel of u.s. support. >> the rocket attacks from the terrorist organizations inside gaza on israeli cities and towns must end. >> reporter: secretary clinton met with palestinian leader this morning and will meet with president morsi later today. >> the goal must be a durable outcome that advances the security and legitimate aspirations of israelis and palestinians alike. >> reporter: egyptian president mohamed morsi is seen as

critical to any peace dale. his muslim brotherhood is close to hamas. a hamas spokesman is quoted in one report saying we hold absolutely no hope of hillary clinton helping to resolve this conflict. >> susan mcginnis in washington this morning. thank you so much. as we reported egypt is expected to play a key role in brokering a truce and trying to maintain it. clarissa ward reports from caro this morning. >> reporter: good morning. >> we were expecting some type of announcement last night regarding a cease-fire. what happened? >> reporter: that's the million dollar question. everyone here in egypt was expecting for president morsi to make an announcement last night. they schedule ad time 9:00 p.m. local. the english language newspaper here has the headline as israel and gaza agree on a cease-fire.

that's the level of confidence here that people felt that there was going to be a cease-fire agreement. now trying to determine why that agreement never happened is very difficult. obviously people on each side have different opinions. one official with the freedom and justice party which is the political wing of the muslim brotherhood told us the israelis requested to postpone the agreement for another day and she told us we would hear something later today. but at this stage nobody really knows. >> secretary of state hillary clinton is on her way to egypt. what does she bring to the negotiating table that wasn't there already? >> reporter: well, obviously she met last night with prime minister netanyahu, she met this morning with the palestinian president. today she will be sitting down with the egyptian president morsi. she won't be dealing directly with hamas but essentially egypt is hamas's proxy as far as the u.s. is concerned in dealing

with these negotiations. she will be putting a lot of pressure on them to essentially sign on to a cease-fire. >> so as of now, another day of conflict. what can we expect? what developments will we see today? >> reporter: everybody is watching this situation very closely. but after yesterday where we so, where we expected to hear an announcement last night i think everybody is a little bit skeptical about getting their hopes up. >> clarissa ward reporting from caro this morning. thank you. this morning two men wearing suicide vests attempted to attack a u.s. base in kabul, afghanistan. the bombers approached the base on foot and detonated their vests when police opened fire. an alarmist in a nearby embassy warnedm to take cover. the taliban says it is responsible. secretary of defense leon panetta said the fight against terrorism will require an ongoing effort. he said u.s. forces decimated al

qaeda's leadership but the threat has not been eliminated. >> this campaign against al qaeda will largely take place outside declared combat zones. using a small footprint approach that includes precision operations, partnered activities with foreign, special force operations and capacity building so that partner countries can be more effective in combatting terrorism on their own. >> panetta also said associated al qaeda groups are making in roads. republican lawmakers are stepping up their opposition to the nomination of susan rice to be the next secretary of state. they said she was misleading about who was behind the attack on u.s. consulate in benghazi. terrorism was cut out of talking points. the direct of national

intelligence, the dni. >> reporter: u.n. ambassador susan rice relied on those talking points during an appearance on "face the nation" where she called it a spontaneous demonstration. not an act of terrorism. >> we do not have information at present that leads to us conclude this was premeditated or preplanned. >> reporter: republicans have accused her of intentionally making misleading statement, suggesting they tone down any references to terrorism for political reasons ahead of the presidential election. cia director david petraeus told congress last week that an early draft of the talking points did include a link between al qaeda and the attack. but the official told us someone in the office of the dni crossed it out because the links were deemed too tenuous to make public at that point. the head of dni is james clapper an obama appointee. clapper reviewed the points but there's no indication that he personally made the edits.
